1997 Ford Expedition - My left front speaker is dead. Could this be a fuse or is it a blown speaker? Could it just be a loose wire? This is my wife's truck and she said it just quit working one day. Any thoughts?

Loose or chaffed wire is my guess.

Loose or broken wire? Generally, the fuse sits in the stereo/radio. I doubt a fuse is blown otherwise none of the speakers would work.

The most common fault is a loose wire. Anyways I would check the balance, wives move controls without knowing what are they for.
Fuses, speakers ussualy do not have fuses.

Okay, so if it's a loose wire there is nothing I can do right? I have no clue how to get to the back of the stereo. Any suggestions? I probably need to take it somewhere.

Thanks guys.

The owners manual might tell you how to get to the back of the stereo.

I suspect the area of concern is at the speaker...not the stereo.

You could try to take the door panel off and reach the guts if you wanted.

+1.....or a loose wire at the speaker....at the the back of the stereo, all wires are likely connected in a single plug. If that came loose, the whole thing wouldn't work.

Jeffski, I had the rear speakers on my wifes' Blazer come on and off at random. Probably some loose wires, I took it to ABC Warehouse and had them put in a pair of Sony speakers to replace the old ones. It sounds much better, and it eliminated the problem, $65 well spent.

Could also be a blown speaker.

It has 165,000 miles on it but going strong. We were thinking of upgrading this year but are leaning towards waiting one more year. Long story short, not sure if it's worth putting any money into it right now. So no, it's not fixed.

Should be a simple fix, as mentioned above, the loose wire is probably at the speaker, not at the harness plug on the stereo unit itself. Ford speakers are CCC and a modest upgrade makes the system sound so much better than stock.

1997 Ford Expy radio should have 4 little holes that are on the sides of the radio tow on each side? My 98 F150 has them. There is a tool you get, possibly at a local Best Buy or Circuit City. Put the tool into the holes, 1 tool per side then the whole radio slides right out. No taking apart the dash. I'd actually suspect the Speaker connection over the Radio connection especially if the speaker is on the door. Open shut Open Shut for 11 years could have knocked the connection loose.

The speaker wire often gets moved around by the window sliding up and down. My passenger speaker will be intermittent when the window is all the way down. Could have just gotten knocked off.

Ford still uses those cheap paper speakers with whizzer cones so a fairly cheap replacement will make a really noticeable improvement in sound quality.
