Mercury Marine laid off 50 salaried employees on Wednesday, citing lower boat and engine sales. The company told the Fond du Lac Reporter that the layoffs are permanent, and included office workers, managers and directors in its Fond du Lac headquarters as well as facilities in Florida and Oklahoma.

"These are difficult decisions, but necessary decisions," Dennis Rooney, vice president of human resources at Mercury, told the paper.

Mercury spokesman Steve Fleming noted that more jobs could be cut if the economy heads deeper into recession. "Additional reductions in work force are a possibility should the market continue to weaken or if we see a more effective way to address market opportunities," Fleming told the paper. "Staffing adjustments are a reality for all businesses, and Mercury is no exception."

The cuts did not affect Mercury's 1,600-member union, president Mark Zillges told the paper. Union members have suspended contract negotiations and plan to meet April 12 to vote on strike authorization, a precursor to a walkout. The union's three-year contract will expire June 21.

Fleming discounted rumors of more drastic cutbacks. "There are no plans to sell, shut down or move Mercury Marine," he told the paper.

Of those 50, five are here in Stillwater among the 1000 employees. According to MC, they are given a generous serverance package and a company is hired to find them another job as long as it takes.

It is a shame that the CEO's don't consider cutting their fat pay packet first, rather than some little guy struggling to make ends meet IMHO

Quite often the top brass does cut their packages in medium and smaller companies. THe family owned comapnies in particular are often very generous in letting the owners and managers cut their pay first.
The biggie is of course always the unionized side (none of those were touched in this round) with people idle or working at less than capacity our overall competitiveness gets hammered and that cannot be allowed or teh jobs go forever, it is better to cut 15 and let 50 continue to work hard than have 65 loose their jobs.

Unfortunately it is always a hard decision no one wants to make but it has to be made. It is a little like budgeting and government. Tax revenue is good one year and boom the payroll is expanded, next year we are back to "normal" tax revenue and wow we have a probelm that cannot be resolved as the govt "cannot" fire people......

I hope they all find good jobs and maybe some of them are ready to retire.

They may strike now.

Quote:
Union workers at Mercury Marine voted on Saturday that they would have the option to go on strike if contract negotiations between the union and company fail.

According to a story in the Fond Du Lac Reporter, members of the International Association of Machinists, Local 1947, met on Saturday to vote on whether the union should have the right to strike. Union president Mark Zillges told the paper that members voted 99.8 per cent in favour.

Zillges said the vote does not guarantee a strike, but rather notifies the company and union headquarters that a strike may occur. "The vote will not put us on the streets," he told the paper. The union recently suspended its contract talks with Mercury Marine. The current three-year contract expires on June 21.
