Hi
A boat owner claims that his boat has been in storage for a year, and now his brand new 1-year old engine won't start. (I guess he put it in storage after performing maintenance on it.) What do you think is the seriousness of this engine. Just need some minor tune up? or some big $$ involved to get it running.

Thanks

The only way to know is to troubleshoot it out. I am sure there are probably some simple steps to work on in order, but without knowing a bit more about it, the procedure is pretty hard to define.

What maintenance did he do? Maybe put the plug wires back on in the wrong order? Didn't winterize properly? Forgot to put oil back in it or the oil drain plug back in? Battery went dead? Left the transom plug in and the engine compartment flooded?

Could be lot of stuff from cheap to ridiculously expensive to fix.

Could be a simple as the kill switch not connected, or could be worse. As others stated, more information is needed.

What type of engine? Has the engine been run? How many hours? What part of the country was it stored? Is he trying to sell it to you? If he is trying to sell the boat, I would insist that he take it to a reputable shop and have it brought to working condition and tested.

As others have said.
Kill switch installed and make sure it's in neutral! Strong battery.

I don't no how many times I've gone to start mine and had bumped the kill switch on the throttle control or had it in gear and got a momentary "oh $#!+" feeling.

Thanks for all your helps.
I hope it is that simple as the kill switch, as i am looking seriously at it. It's in TX so mostly hot. He did not mention much else other than that it has not been started for about a year since the last maintenance (not sure by whom). He mentioned that it needs tune up, for less then 1K to have it in working order. Well, i just have to dig more info out from him further, but it seems a good deal.

With a VP motor with fuel injection you can have a battery that spins the motor like a top but still just a bit shy of the voltage needed to make the injectors happy. I had it happen on my boat. Spun like the dickens but no fuel was coming out of the injectors.
Put it on charge for a bit and it spun just as fast only this time the injectors were spitting fuel.

If it is in south TX this may be true, but there are plenty of area of TX that are subject or freezing temperatures and subsequent damage. In the north TX area this past year we have had a couple of days that could have been damaging. If it was inside should not be a problem, but if outside or even covered open storage and not properly winterized, this could be a problem.

The easy checks should be kill switch, battery, neutral, gas present, after that it may be worth getting a mechanic involved.

Be weary of the used boat that has not been properly maintained, even if it is fairly new. YOu may want to consider a survey.

As above.
Check the kill switch and neutral.
Put the battery on trickle overnight or so.
Clip an inductive timing light over a plug wire (any for this purpose) and you will find out if the ignition is firing.

Now, beyond that, yes, what year/motor, carbureted or injected, what maint. was done.
Depending on what maint was done, it may NOT have been in "running condition) (ie, the ignition worked on but not run afterward to prove the work done properly as aluded to above).

Carbureted could take 30 to 40 secconds to fill a carb with fuel to get it to start after sitting all winter and drying out.
A float COULD get stuck closed, preventing this (IMO long shot, but it CAN happen)

Also nothing says a fuel pump could not quit over a winter. Again, LONG SHOT and IMO unlikely, but not impossible.

More info please.
