In this thread http://www.boatingabc.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/387013#Post387013 a terminology issue came up.

What do you call a weekend waterside dwelling in your area?

My parents have a two-bedroom (three, if you count the kid-sized loft with twin beds) “camp” on a lake in Maine. It has a propane stove and fridge and a hand pump for the kitchen sink.

Other family members have similar set-ups and everyone calls their place a “camp”.

Some people from other parts of New England have summer “camps” in the area.
Some of them have electricity and plumbing, but they are still called camp (vs. lake house).

I know some people consider this a cabin, etc...

Is it a regional thing? Or maybe a rental term?

While growing up in central NY, my wife’s family rented a “cabin” every summer.
Those cabins were just smaller versions of what my family calls a camp.

Do the amenities change the term?
Or size?
Or seasonal use?
Or rental vs. ownership?
Or construction type?
Or quality?
Or?

For those of you who live on the water full-time... I am just envious \:\/

Not a compelling thread, but at least I didn’t hijack the original post any further...

I'd call it a lake house with not so modern conveniences. Looks to be normal stick framing, shingled roof, etc. A cabin would be log framed. A "camp" would be either a site to pull in an RV or a site with permanently (or semi-permanently) situated RV.

Whatever you call, I bet its a fun place to stay \:D \:D \:D

Cabin to me, is a hunting place.

Our place on the lake was a cottage.

If it has a toilet inside it's not a camp.
Cabin would be my call on this. Simple, square frame, shed extension. A "Shotgun" design, one in which a shotgun blast from the front door would hit every room in the place.

A structure which someone can live in full time with modern appliances is a home(house). Lake house, River house, etc...

A structure which has more primitive living conditions would be a cabin.

A camp would be a tent, pop-up or permenet tent type structure. No indoor heat or plumbing.

Cabin.

In some parts of Missouri, it would be a "mansion."

Sorry HF ...

Upstate NY - Weekend Home at the Lake, even though it has Eletricity, Hot Water, Telephone, Full Bath, Microwave, Dish-TV and Heat is still called a Camp.

My dad's generation did with out all the above and built the " Camps " with out power and God rest his sole, he saw it all come to the lake.

Today, the closest thing to a camp there is cooking with charcole \:\)

Its a regional thing \:\)

Interesting... I'd side with HF's def's but then again, I'm also a west-coaster... has to be a regional thing.. but, when we say we're going 'camping', it usually refers to a bit of roughing it. No solid 4 walls, no running water onsite, no indoor bathroom or cooking facilities.

Now that we have a RV, there aint no roughin' it when we go 'camping'! \:\)

I know what I'd call it, but that don't mean that's what it is...

It's whatever you want it to be.

My Dad's first " Camp " was just 4 walls and an outhouse for several years.

Dad cut the rafters my hand, all with out test fitting, much to the dismay of my Grandfather as family lore goes. My Father the engineer truted his calcuations, my Grandfather the Syracuse Road Crew supervisor wanted test fitting. Me the Insurance Agent, wants both ;\)

What most call camping, I call Backpacking. I " Boat Camping " with the mates, but having a V-8 Vehicle at the dock is 1 step away from " Car Camping " to me.

When your boat is 20 feet away and a lakeside store is 2 miles away - its not real camping - lots of fun but not camping - even if you are on an island in the middle of Lake George.

I even had FLB's Gang and Eric from PA over for Dinner at this site - what a great day \:\)

One of the things in life that really brings on happy memories - yes take your kids camping - especailly boat camping \:\)

I would call it a cottage or cabin.

I have a lake house (4 season place = just like a regular house). I would say a camp is a place without heat (or a minimal heating system).

To me, camp means tent. Cabin means less than three bedrooms. Somebody's usually sleeping on the deck in a cabin. Lake House would be three bedrooms. More than three bedrooms on the lake would be "Friggin Microsoftie."

My folks' two bedroom at Chelan, one up, one down, about 1100 square feet, has always been "The Cabin."

A camp has tents, period.
A cabin is an unfinished inside wood structure, that may or may not have electricity. Certainly no plumbing.
A cottage is a fully functioning house, it's just little.
A lake house is a normal sized full featured home, that just happens to be on a lake.

I'm just happy to be here!

For all of you regional guys that call permanent building a camp, let me ask you this...

In the movies, or in a real life hike, whent he leader says "Let's make camp for tonight." Do you go to the Home Depot and get 2x4s and other lumber and build a structure?
No you don't. You set up a tent or roll your sleeping bags out on the ground. That's a camp. You're just weird for thinking any building is a "camp"!

Must be a regional thing, back in the mid 70's my parents and many of our relatives bought mountain property to build cabins on. The sign at the entrance said "cabin lots for sale" for 20 years. There were (still are I guess) many other cabin lot sites in this area. My parents cabin was 24' x 24', steep A-frame roof because of snow--the northwest corner was the bedroom, northeast corner the kitchen, in-between was the bathroom... south east corner was dining, the rest was living room with a fireplace. Upstairs was an open room that served as a large bedroom and storage, with cabinets built against the roofline the entire length on both sides. with 1" plank flooring that also served as the ceiling below. A spiral staircase got you up there. Dad built large balcony's out front, both upstairs and downstairs. Small built in electric heaters were put in the walls in several places for heat, they had power, water and even a telephone. It was one great place to get away to! And their cabin is typical of the thousands of cabins built in the area. And you won't find one, single, solitary soul who will refer to their cabin as a "cottage".

Adirondack Camp.

Thanks for the clarification.

The terminology used in the NE is just that, terminology. A basic shelter on a lake there is called a camp. The same structure on Big Bear Lake is called a cabin, even in the real estate add. Now over on Lake Arrowhead a lot of the camps are mansions owned by celebs... Not all but a lot!

For sure it's a regional thing. Like calling jeans 'Dungeries??' Or calling a pizza a 'pie??'.

My region just happens to be right.. \:D
