I've eliminated a LOT of 3rd party emails directly to my trash folder by setting up a simple rule in my email client of having my name in the TO or CC line. (If-Then type of rule).

That simple rule eliminates many emails from distro lists and not TO me (my name or nicnames) specifically.

There are a few that go there that I need, but you can always scan the titles before emptying the trash folder.
