Where can I get gas for $3.10/gallon? Thats cheap.

I could see them, in time, becoming a more popular commuter car than some might give them credit for. Have one vehicle (a truck even!) that you can do anything you want with, and one of these just for going to work and "trips." I can see that, if they prove reliable and there's enough of a support network to make them practical. Maybe they'd even have a Mac built into the dash.

If the marketing on these kinds of things would be like, "Think of all the ways this might benefit YOU," instead of, "You are a pompous, selfish, ignoramous if you don't buy one of these in order to benefit ME," they might have a lot more success in the marketplace.

That better be one gas hungry truck or you better commute many, many miles.

LOL, it would probably work better than Microsoft's system in the Ford vehicles.... ;\)

Just kidding, i've heard good things about Microsoft's sync.

Sounds like 161 Gallons of Carbon Credits that could be sold to Al Gore for a profit.

I don't know of many full-size trucks that aren't. For me, 18 hwy, 15/16 city, 7.5 towing. I'm thinking that something like this (probably not this, since the first version of anything radically new usually isn't what wins the market) could offset the high cost of fuel when the other vehicle is being used.

We each commute about 10K miles per year, so 20K/year total in our family.

Heck, I'm not kidding. I think MS sucks. I don't defend them on the merits of their products (since I don't think they have many), but rather on the fact that it's what business runs on, at least for now.

If they continue only to offer the gas version, I don't foresee it becoming anything more than a novelty in this country. Too many other cars with similar or better economy.

Last time I looked, there were used diesels available in Canada for about $15k. But you can't bring 'em over the border. Shame, that.

Wow, lotta action, more than I have time to read!

Just want to take small issue with the notion that if you finance for many years, then you can't afford what you're financing....

I know some people who have a bottom line worth millions, yet everything they have is financed. This is because all of their big money is 'working', and any money that stops working has to have income taxes paid on it. And financing is lots cheaper than income tax...

Another assumption on your point, Derek, and my feathers aren't a bit ruffled. Merely pointing out to you the way you appear when making blanket statements based on assumptions.

And for giggles, I just did the math on the difference in my cost of fuel on the miles I HAVE driven in the 42 months I've owned the diesel Mercedes. 60,000 miles @26 mpg @$3.50=$8,076.92. Vs. 60,000 @ 71.3 mpg @$3.50= $2,945.30.

Now is it worth it to gain roughly $120/mo to give up an S-class Mercedes for a roller skate? Can't say, just now, cuz you can't buy 'em at any price.

But mine will run on reclaimed french fry grease, and the snazzy new one won't. Further complicating the matter.

I guess one of the assumptions is each vehicle's initial cost is exactly the same......

And thanks for bring up the old Mercedes. But it's not relevant to the discussion at hand. Whether you're buying a Smart Car or a Toyota, you're still buying something new. The number still stand.

From time to time, you make sweeping statements based on ASSUMPTIONS. It generally comes from not listening effectively, or in adding meaning where none was implied. Or, occasionally just getting the facts wrong. As in this thread.

It's ok, though. I'll just point it out when it happens. ;\)
