Last summer I received a recall notice from Cobalt regarding the Ski Pylon. Apparently there was risk of injury or damage due to the Ski Pylon support not being strong enough under heavy load. Cobalt does have a fix for the problem, which was to install a reinforcement plate located in the engine compartment just behind where the ski pylon is inserted.
The problem is that this is the same location where Cobalt installed the fire extinguisher. The mechanic from my dealership didnít seem to know how to deal with this and wanted to relocate the extinguisher on the port side of the engine compartment. This would limit access to the port side where one of the batteries is located plus the drive fluid reservoir. I didnít feel good about this option as asked him to come back with a better idea.
Does anyone have a 2006 232 with the Cobalt fire extinguisher and did you get the recall installed? How was it done?

Your dealership should call Cobalt and ask them what to do. I am new to the Cobalt world, but in my limited experiencing talking to the factory, they want to help. They may suggesst adding a second automatic extinguisher if moving one to the side. Or they will suggest something else. The point is to have your dealer call Cobalt before doing anything.

You can also call Cobalt and talk to them about it. They will work with you and likely call your dealer for you.

KK I haven't had mine done yet, let me know what you find out. I also have wondered how needed it is, I think the main issue is people are towing other things then people with it.

I'll bet it's because of the larger water toys and multi-person tubes that people are pulling.

There was a death in the local news recently. A smallish runabout with a ski pylon/tripod was pulling a three person tube. The ski pylon/tripod 'collapsed' and was torn from the stern. As it came out, it hit and killed the spotter.

Very tragic.

Any one ever see safety straps from the rear tie downs to the ski eye?

I have not. The only straps I have seend for a tow point are the front straps for a wakeboard pylon.

I have only seen it once. A guy was towing a tube and a strap from one tie down to the other but came up through the ski eye. I asked him about it when he was installing it at he ramp and said that his kids liked to tube and it made him feel better in the event that the two bolts through the hull let get go. It wouldn't let the eye fly back at the tube, or would at least slow it down.
I found it to be an interested thought.

Spoke with Cobalt service tech for my region. She indicated that they normally relocate the fire extinguisher on the starboard side which I said is a problem when trying to access the battery or drive fluid reservoir. She will follow-up with someone in engineering to see if the fire extinguisher can be mounted via shims over the reinforcement plates (the ones they add to strengthen the ski pylon). She will also follow-up with my dealer.
Too bad the service tech needs to speak to engineering who needs to speak with someone else etc. It would be nice to have spoken to a person who knows.
Next update will be when I hear back from either cobalt or my dealer.

The recall was finally performed. Between calls with the dealer and Cobalt they came up with solution.
The picture shows the steel support bracket located behind the fire extinguiser down to the hull. They also monunted the Active Corrosion Protection System electical module on the reinforcement bracket. They did a great job.

Does the fire extinguisher nozzle still point directly at the carb or throttle body injector if so equipped? I suppose that MPI is better in this reguard as there is really no place for there to be a fire started by a backfire in the engine through the carb or throttle body and it could be aimed just about anywhere as long as it was towards the engine.
