I am getting married this August and as part of our wedding we are going to have a camping trip on the CT river launching from South Hadley. I have boated on this part of the river my entire life but usually during the week. I have camped a few times but never with a group this large.

I am wondering what the best spot to camp is. I am thinking of Rainbow Beach (at the end of the airport) as it is large enough and has flat areas for us to put our tents.

We are heading out Aug 4-5 and there should be around 20 of us.

Does anyone have a better spot? Any potential problems with rainbow beach?

If anyone is ever on the river and sees our white mailbu say hi...we are always looking to meet up with other local boaters.

We went to "4th of July Beach" (opposite the airport) for an overnighter last year. There wa plenty of room for tents and one member of the party slept in a tent on shore. I'd stay above the high water mark though...

Dave R - I guess I have never pulled up to that beach. most of that side across from the airport I have never gone to due to the shallow water leading to it. Is it deep enough to get in and out easily? I guess I'll have to take a spin up there today and check it out. After all...any excuse to get on the water is a good one.

Was for me and several boats much larger than mine.

Maybe I have the wrong place in mind though. There are good pics of the place on pages 5 and 6 of this thread: http://www.boatingabc.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/229236/page/0/fpart/1

thanks dave...i remember the planning for the get together last year..we could not make it. This year it's the weekend of our wedding!!

I took a look at the pictures from 06 and I can get a pretty good picture of where you folks were anchored. Thanks for the pointers.

You can not camp overnight on Rainbow beach - Environmental Police will toss you at night. Your best bet is to stake out one of the ends of Mitch's island on Friday night. Plenty of room for camping at either end. Nice campsites on the southern end.

The northern end of 4th of July beach is another option, but you will have to watch the water height. Mitch's would be my first choice.

Congrats on the wedding!!!!

Thanks for the heads up dockmaster - it would have been a rough time with all of our tents setup and burgers on the grill if we had to move to another beach. I'll have to take a look at the other beaches. I too like mitches island but I have to work friday night and can't hit the river until saturday...hopefully there will be some spots left.

I am lucky to have met someone who likes boating and camping as much as I do!!!

Let me see what I can do for you that weekend - maybe we can head out early and save you a spot for the weekend. It will depend on whether or not I'm driving the cruise boat. Right now I'm not scheduled to. How many tents???

WOW...that would be great. I think there will be 20 of us camping with 10 or so tents (which is why I was looking at the large rainbow beach). I am free during the day on friday and can set up the stuff then. I am just nervous about leaving it unattended overnight until we can get back out there saturday.

This camping trip is our jack and jill party for our friends. Most of the people we know are boaters and this is a perfect way for all of us to spend some time enjoying the water together.

dockmaster - we don't usually boat on the CT river during the weekends. We take our boat up to otis reservoir. I am going to be out there this week if we have some good weather scoping out the other beaches. Do you get out during the week at all?

I am in Lake George, NY right now. Won't be back in MA until late Friday. We are planning to overnight on the river Saturday night. Not sure if we'll be at Mitches or 4th of July beach yet.

dockmaster - hope lake george was good. We used to stay at a place up there with the boat north of Bolton's Landing in the cove. It's a huge lake for the 18' boat we had at the time.

I checked out mitches island and fourth of july beach. Both offer good camping spots but I really like mitches island. The non marked side of the island is plenty deep (we used to run up that side all the time before they marked the river) and will be perfect to moor the boat out of the traffic.

Our plan is to head out friday AM and set up the tents. My sister and her boyfriend will camp out friday to watch our stuff and the remainder of us will join them in the morning on saturday once I am done with work and packing.

Thanks again for the camping recommendations (without you we would have been kicked off of rainbow beach mid weekend) and for the offer to keep an eye on our site....we will be out there sat and sun so stop by if you are around!! I will pm you my phone number...it's always good to meet up with fellow river boaters!!

James

We should be out there that weekend. Are you staying at the north or south end of Mitches??? There is a nice sandy spot towards the north end.

Seabuddy - those pic's are from 4th of July beach.

We will be camping (if the site is open) towards the middle of the island. I walked the whole island and there are several places that will work. We are planning on taking the best one that is still open.

I took some pics of the island but they are still in the camera.

See you on the water.

We should be out there on Saturday - not sure if we are going to overnight or not - depends if we have company or not.

James,

It was great meeting you. What a super weekend, not a cloud in the sky all weekend, water at 82 degrees, temps approaching 90, and 60's at night.

Glad you had a great time on the island, hopefully you will come back and camp again. We had a great overnight up at our end of the island, even though we weren't "roughing" it as much as you were.

Very impressed with your wake surfing - never saw that before.

See you on the river!!!!

~Jay
