Good eye Chunder.  I never noticed that, never seen it before?

Is it just a plastic cowl/shroud or is there more engineering involved. (dampening material, tuned vanes, ... ) To counter the air intake noise/whistle on the 8.1's?

I get your drift, Kelly. But truth to tell, I'd much rather have a boat that whispers quick and classy than one that screams "speed". And I like it even better when whisperer pulls away from screamer! (Another 150 horses or so would be PERFECT!):)

Nice, but I still love my 240. Keep trying to get rid of it,but my better judgement keeps me hanging on to her.

Love the new 232 / 242 / 252 boats.

Really preferred the 232, but would have liked to have seen a head onboard, then comes the 242 to solve that.

I HAD been in a "good" place.....able to fight off the "upgrade demons" since the 252 was arguably too big for where we boat, and the 232 had no head.

Now........I can hear Adversary98 spending my money! \:\(

I looked up some test data on boattest.com. Just for kicks...

232 with a VP 280hp 5.7 DP 46mph top end (WTF?) and max economy at 3.58mpg.

232 with a VP 420hp 8.1 GXi 56mph top end (WTF?) and max economy at 3.05mpg

252 with a Merc 375hp BIII 533mph top end and max economy at 3.35mpg

I think something is screwed up with the 232 tests. Both 232's were tested on the same day, 59*, light chop, 75% humidity. The 252 had 3 people, 1/4 fuel, 79*, and 75% humidity.

I thought the boats were faster than that?

Well...if you look at those test results, then YES.

However, I have been around a 232 and a 252. I do NOT remember them being that slow. Not at ALL. Infact, I thought the 232 would touch 60 with a 375hp BB.

So IDK?

If memory serves me, builders pay Boattest to test their boats, so I would think someone in Cobalt was over seeing these tests to see everthing was going well.

Dawg,

Have you priced out a new 240 lately (to compare with yours)? Our local dealer has one here like mine, except for perfect pass, and the MSRP is $97k!

Can boats appreciate?

Sorry, haven't been keeping up with this thread. Those top ends on the 232 do not match my experience, I've seen 3 - 4 mph faster (actually I can't comment on the 420 8.1l, I've never been in one of those in a 232). But the 280hp should be good for closer to 50. Does boattest list the prop used?

The 252 sounds a little low too.

The 242 we had with a 375hp worked past 60 speedo, maybe high 50s on a GPS (didn't have one with me).

A 240 for $97k? Wow... Never ceases to amaze me what some dealers will mark their boats at. Can't bring up the pricing page at the moment, but I would think it would be hard to even MSRP one up that high, let alone selling price...

Ah well.

My 232 is setup with a VP DP 8.1 375HP.
At WOT the speedo reads approx. 62MPH, but the GPS comes in at 59MPH.
Quite satisfied with the top end.

That is more in-tune with what I have heard from others as well.

IMHO: something screwed up the Boattest results.

Hey everyone, I'm new to Cobalt & was looking up Cobalt threads. Found your group and joined in. I have a '99 253 (white with blue stripes much like pdqcobalt's) and it is on the Heritage trailer.

I was also looking for forums just for Cobalt boats and couldn't find one, so I created it. If you get a chance, I'd sure like to get to know all of you better & fill the forum up with members who can share information & opinions.

I'm in the process of creating a Charter or "first 50" membership group who would have the ability to advise the direction and general conduct of the forum. They would also be eligible for free (or optional donation) business cards sent to them that advertise the forum as they see other Cobalt owners about.

Please do let me know what you think.

To me, it was time.

Well, let's start with a few basics.

First, you'll want to discourage 'hijacking'. (That is the very common practice of jumping into a thread with a completely new idea. Although a generally tolerated transgression among long-time forum participants, it is particularly jarring from brand new posters.)

Second, you should participate in a number of boating message boards and absorb some of the common courtesies so you don't inadvertently offend the very audience you're trying to attract. Incidentally, many well-known BBs do not allow ANY cross-posting of other boating-related bulletin boards. BABC has always been very liberal in this regard, but a first time post linking a new BB and targeting our membership is in exceedingly bad taste.

Good luck with your venture.

I appreciate the feedback & how it was positioned. I'll see about maintaining the suggested practices.

(With my experience, I really should have known better.)
