Hello all and thanks for all of the useful information. We have been pondering over numerous boats over the past few months and have been researching for about 6 months. I believe we have narrowed it down to Cobalt, Sea Ray, Chaparral, Monterey, and Four Winns if that is considered narrowing it down. Have found a few decent deals on Caravelle but they just do not seem to be as well made as the others (IMHO), and I believe even the used Cobalts although very nice, are just too pricey....We have not fully decided between a deck or more traditional BR but here is what we are looking for...23' or larger with a minimum of 300HP. We plan on cruising, skiing and tubing with 6-8 people on most outings. The only real option that we feel is a necessity is a head (2 little girls that won't go anywhere else!) Question I have is how do you get to demo...Most of the boats we have found used do not really fit our parameters within driving distance. We really want to get a feel for how different boats perform without having to find someplace to rent each type. We live in SW texas near Clear lake and will utilize the boat in the bay and short trips into the gulf on clear days. I know this is a loaded question and will vary based on individual perceptions but does anyone have any recommendations on what to look for and how to find boats to test to help us narrow our decisions.....We would like to be in the 30-40K range including TTL and trailer

Thanks for any input

J

Welcome Kodiakjack!

One drawback to pre-owned boat shopping is that you are a slave to what is on the market...however, if you don't mind driving you can ease the pain a little. With a used boat, proximity of the dealer is not as important. Only a reputable service shop.
Deckboats will not handle rough water as well as bowriders, but many db's have narrowed that gap considerably. For family ergonomics, a large DB is a good fit, but if you are more into watersports, you might want to stick to BRs .
300hp is the minimum power I would settle for.

Maybe you could spend a long weekend at one of the marinas where you plan to boat. Spend some time looking at boats that would fit your plans and ask the owners for their candid opinions.

If you get where you plan to boat and don't see many of a particular brand or style you were considering their may be a reason.

In that size range most of the deckboats will have a head but some of the bowriders may not. Still lots to choose from.

Try advertising what you are looking for on the local craigslist.org

That's how I found my seller; he saw my ad and responded.

A very good question, tough to demo if it is outside your driving distance.

Welcome to the board by the way

Thanks. Lambert, I am having a hard time even getting the dealers to put a new one in the water. Seems they all require a deposit and signed agreement that we will purchase the boat if the sea trial goes well.....Seems like an aweful lot of trouble but maybe thats what you have to do....Looking at a few leftover 06s and found a nice 248LS Monterey. Would probably be perfect but it has the 375HP engine which is not only $$$ but also prob a good bit more then necessary. Will see where their price goes. Their first offer was 4K off MSRP which is not close for a leftover. Anyway...Guess we will find what we are looking for and enjoy summer or enjoy summer testing used ones until we find our boat. Still have to make the call on DB vs BR but should be able to make that call once we are in the water....

The following is an old thread, but it should give you a good feel for how much discount to expect on a leftover model -

That can be tough. I have a few offers to trial with dealers in my area. But only because I have a rapport via the shows and phone conversations.

Looks like pickings are slim for what you are looking for down there. Come up to Austin and there are many more!!!

Here is another one down there.
2003 Rinker

Looks like mostly fishing boats or cruisers down around Clear Lake!!

I love the Monterey. Great lines on the boat AND has a head, something that my admiral wishes we had on our boat:)

The Sea Ray 220 Select is also very nice. We looked at the 200 Select and we were very impressed. It was just a little bit more than we were willing to spend at that time.

If you will have 6-8 people most of the time, a deck boat might be your best bet. Most DB will have a head and lots of seating area. Just get one with a 20 degree dead rise to handle the chop.

As far as HP, get the most you can get/afford. It might cost a little bit more, but you will have a better resale with the boat.

Too new to chime in other than that our SR is a well built boat and we really enjoyed our first year of boating (and learning) with it. We have been out to Long Beach with HockeyFamily and seabuddy. HF's Monterey is smaller than what you are looking for but he and his wife seemed pretty happy with it and I know seabuddy has taken his Monterey way out (to Bimini). We looked at Moterey at the LA show this year as well as SeaRay. Loved the 298 cuddy bowrider with twins but tooooo big for me.

Good luck in your search.

You may need to decide about how and when you want to go out on choppy water with the gang, if you pick some designs. Most likely, you will find a bow rider that can handle the chop OK. You must spend time looking for the right hull for that water. Most will not do what you want, except on calm mornings. If you want to keep boating into the afternoon, study and look for the right hull to do that.

Sorry its been awhile since I juumped on, been put of town. Thanks to all who provided suggestions. We are still narrowing down our options but I think....We have decided on a Monterey 248 LS, or a Chaparral 230 SSI. Will depend on how they ride, and what we can find on the market. Have found good buys on both models and are talking with the sellers...We will see...Cobalts appear to be the best looking boat, just too pricy for our first boat. Thanks for everything and I will try to stay involved with the board. Plenty of useful information and great owner perspectives....Will post pics etc if we find the one for us before they prices jump for the summer

Thanks again
