i did, my beagle i got him when he was a pup lived and playied with him
and taught him to catch and such and then he got old before i knew it, he couldent see as well, ran into doors and i thought it was funny, hies 15 now his health isnt bad but he cant see and thats a problem, his eyes are all clouded over, tho i could have let him live but i chose to let him go, i chose to be with you on that day tho most said not to and let someone else do it, i knew i had to do it.
the vet gave you a shot and you went to sleep i my arms in 20 min, i was there at the start and now at the end, god bless you my friend, well meet up someday i hope.

his remins i had cremated and in that budwiser stien along with his collor as you can see there on the left, his remains are in that stien, the stien has alot of value to it too,.

kindof my mom got it through a mail order book and had it engaved with the date of death, just before thanks giving that year or on that week end, i hate thanks giving weekend.

its not just missing a pet or being with out them, its putting them to there death and knowing it, with that final shot that stops the brain and then the heart as i listened to and knew it was the end of his life with me, i needed to be with him till the final moment, the circle of life i guess

I am now 51 yet I still remember (as if it was yesterday)when I was 16 being with my German Sheperd "Ted" when we had to have him "put to sleep". Ted was also 16 and we both had grown up together, I still miss him 35 years later!

It's the final act of kindness a loving owner can do...and also the most difficult....

I agree that it is the final act of kindness if the dog is suffering. I have three Maltese and dread the day when this will happen. My question is why if it is an act of kindness do we not allow this to be performed on humans if they are suffering? My grandmother who is 92 suffers from advanced alzhiemers, she cries daily because she is scared, confused and in pain. Would this not be the humane thing to do??

Our pets depend on us to do the right thing when they no longer enjoy life. I've done it several times and it doesn't get easier. I still get emotional when I observe their memorials. Many years ago I had to make the decision for my working dog. I was in the police K-9 unit for 9 years. After a fantastic career as a police dog and several years enjoying life at home, I had to do the tuoughest thing I ever did, put down my partner who probably saved my life on more than one occasion. You did the admirable thing!

In the 80's I had to put three dogs down at the same time. It was a heartbreaker that we cried over for days. It was tough because we knew it was the right thing for them but not necessarily the easy thing for us.

The question you have to ask yourself when considering putting a pet down is this....

"Am I keeping him alive for him, or for me?"

After answering that as objectively as you can it makes the decision easier.

ckc i can uderstand that feeling, my grandma has that and shies in a nersing home in ceder rapids IOWA, she doesnt know anyone anymore, her thoughts are speratic and in caos some times she remembers a name or two, i was there last tuesday so i dropped in to see her and say hi and hold her hand , she doesnt remember me but i remember her as she was and thats all i really need,, i know i went off topic here but its all the same the things we really care for and loosing that person or pet.

i wish i could do something about my grandma but the law wont let us do anything, but we can put our pets to sleep tho and end the pain they might have.

Us too. We had our beloved Trixie, a Lahsa Apso mix, put to sleep last year. She was a pound puppy and the best dog we've ever had. At 15 yrs. old, her eye sight was failing, she had arthritis, hearing loss, etc. Near the end, she hurt so bad at times that she would shiver but, when I came home from work, she would literally jump for joy. She wasn't much for "smooching" but, she showed her love for us in so many other ways. I was with her at the end and it broke my heart. We have pictures and videos to remember her but, she'll never be replaced. We miss her every day. We love our other two "four legged children" but, Trixie was very special ... a once-in-a-lifetime spirit. If dogs do go to heaven, I know one who will meet us at the gate jumping for joy to see us again.

Sorry for your loss. Let your memories ease your pain.

I do not ever want to put one of our precious boxers down.. I do not think my wife and I will be able to do it. They are like our kids!
You have done the right thing but what a hard choice to make but the right one...

I've had to do it, but it has been a long time. I dread the day that time comes again. It should be a while barring something. Cat is 5, Lab is 4 and Boxer is 11 months.

Wow, how ironic that I stumbled on this post today. I had to put our 17 1/2 year old American Eskimo, Buddy, down on Friday. I'm 43 years old, and this was my first dog (we got him as a 10 month old puppy). I never had to do this before, but I knew it was the right thing. He had terrible arthritis, and on Friday had 4-5 siezures. Luckily, my wife was home and called me right away. We were both with him and held him while the vet did the deed. It was very peacful for him, I think he also knew it was time.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Yesterday, 2/4/07 marked 5 years to the date that I had to put my buddy Brutus to sleep, I still miss him very much. I know how painful the loss can be and in time I hope the good memories will help comfort you.

We had to put our beloved Koli down in 2000. She was our first dog and she was wonderful. I know how difficult it had to have been for you and your family. We found her on the hottest day of the year in Tucson (it was 114). Someone had abandoned her in the parking lot of El Con shopping mall. My son and daughter took to her immediately. We took her home and cleaned her up (she was all greasy from trying to get in the shade under cars in the parkin lot). My wife knew that Koli had my heart when I told her that I'd given her a couple of hot dogs to eat (we, of course, had no dog food).

My daughter had been interested in being a vet 'til we had to do that and that turned her off to that career choice. She said that she could never have to do that on a regular basis, even if it were someone else's pet. It still brings a sad moment and a water to the eyes to think of that day. We still miss her very much.

But, focus on the good times that you had together as partners, not on the final moments.
