What does a tune-up cost? How often do you do it/have the dealer do it?

Oil and other fluid changes?

What broke? Expensive to fix?

Anything mechanical wear out/rust out?

How about in past years as well as this year?

Do you split out winterization from other maintanence items?

Trying to understand your expenses year over year, too.

18.50 for a new starter slave solenoid. I did the fix in about 15 minutes.

The trailer got new bearings and races. I think that was less than $50, but I don't recall for certain.

Winterization last year was expensive, but I overpurchased on lube and bought some specialty tools. I think I spent about $175. This year I think it was $12 for a new oil filter. I had everything else I needed in the garage.

About $100 in trailer brake parts, seals and bearing grease. Maybe another $100 in engine and drive fluids, anodes, filters, etc. I spent a few bucks replacing the bearing in my freshwater pump. Spent $280 on shrink wrap with a zippered door at the rear. Probably spent $25 on cleaning products.

Two cabinet door latches broke. I replaced them with bronze/SS hardware. Freeze plug fell out of my engine. The brass replacement was cheap, but just awful to install. Lost one of the two bolts that hold my remote oil filter housing. Glad I caught it before the housing fell off. Replaced my radio. Replaced a bunch of snaps in my canvas. Added a couple of snaps to the windshield frame too.

$280 on the 20 hour service, $50 for a spare impeller, and $20 for a prop tool.

Spent more on toys and safety equipment than anything.

Take care,

5 qts of oil I bought to stock up, that was $10. That's it for this year.

Last year was the biggie, $600 to replace one head & recon the other one. That's just the parts. I did the labor myself.

I'm just happy to be here!

Wow!
I gotta get a new boat!
I spent:
$300 for a prop
$700 for new tilt motor and electrical problems (fuse bank on one side of the motor, I think - battery wasn't charging)
$600 winterizing and storage outdoors with shrink wrap.
Must buy 3 new tires for the trailer in the spring.

Didn't get out much so no break down issues this year.
Tune up: under $20 for plugs, my labor
Oil Change: under $30 for oil and filter, my labor
Drive Service: $10 for drive oil, pressure/vacuum test my labor
Winterize: about $30 for fogging oil and antifreeze - my labor.
Other costs: Ramp pass ($85), Boat Reg, Trailer Reg.

Last year had to replace risers, new battery.

If I had to pay someone to work on the boat, I don't think I could afford boating. ;\)

Can't wait for spring!!

Around $150 for oil and other maintenance items.
including an impeller kit that I didn't install.
$150 for a new radio, not sure if that is maintenance.
$150 for the new prop, didn't really need it, but the one I had was a bit green around the gills.
$150 for a new fuel pump, still a touchy subject

Can't think of anything else. I try not to keep track.

Spend loads more on udgrades than on service/maintenance \:\)

New 10" hydraulic jackplate, 6" Setback extensions, custom exhaust tuner, 2 new lapped props, new Merc Racing ECU, just to name a few \:\)

All in the name of speed - did pass 92 though ;\)

thanks,
Lars

$4k for manifolds and risers. $300 deductible for tearing up the prop and outdrive (VERY happy insurance picked up the other $4k of that bill). i don't even want to think about how much for our trip to mystic, ct and back (200 miles at cruise speed). the times the boat was running was priceless. the times it wasn't was largely my fault, so i really can't complain (well, actually, i could). btw, anyone wanna buy my boat a week before it needs new manifolds and risers in 4 years?

Spent $30-something for a fuel pump for the generator, $100 for the starter I let burn up...

...and about $18 for pink antifreeze. Come spring I'll buy oil and filters, and a few gallons of bottom paint, but that goes on NEXT year's tab...

Hmmm...just bought the boat in September, but I wanted to add/delete/change a few things, this is how it added up;
-$250 for parts to do the plugs, oil and filter, impeller, outdrive fluid, water separator/filter and SELOC manual
-$159 for new stereo unit to replace the crapped-out factory JBL
-$440 for Lenco trim tabs and dash indicator switch
-$325 for Navman 4350 fishfinder and fuel monitor
-$35 for the Lobstermount for the Navman
-$60 to replace factory pop-up cleat that popped off into the sea
-$37 to add factory in-sidewall cooler
-$160 for 2nd Optima battery
-$55 for Yandina battery combiner
-$50 for 5 stainless steel cupholders to replace the stock ones

Credit $1500 for selling off the Raymarine C80 stuff that was on the boat when I bought it (sonar and chartplotter)

I think I'm about even...might even have enough left to buy some wax.

Oh crap, I forgot. I bought a 2nd (spare) set of duo-props from a seller on Ebay, $625 including shipping. I'm in the hole again...

By the way, BToran, love the name of your boat. Do you play?

I got off cheap on repairs...$447 to get a part of the exhaust system replaced.

Add to that another $818 for things like oil, filters, battery, new water hose and nozzle, anchor lite, boat wax and water-fuel separators.

Also, another $725 for Equipment like an electrical plug adapter (for a nite light for the dock), a new cover for the windshield, a pair of waders (for launching), etc.

Other expenses include fuel $1400, Moorage $1700, Miscellaneous $3200. YTD total is just about $8,500.

Sounds expensive until you figure we spent about 32 weekends and probably another 40 day/evenings on the boat.

About $900 on the Volvo 100 hour service (had more like 150 hrs on the engine).

$625 on a custom cockpit cover (wish I had done this earlier).

About $500 (parts only) to replace single axle drum brakes with dual axle disk brakes.

About $750 in fuel (yes, I keep a record. no, my wife doesn't see it).

$8 for a new points/condenser set.
$16 for 4 qts oil after the oil filter loosened (never had that happen before!)
Still had $5 worth of Prop Glycol for winterization from last year (overbought).

Not couinting last winter's upgrade replacement of the cracked through exhaust manifolds to Thru-hull jacketed headers & 4" outlets replaced the 2.5's That was $1,500.

New Boat priceless, old boat just the normal oil and filters and cleaning supplies plus gas. say $200 for supplies and 60 hours x 15gph = 900 gallons x 3.50= 3,000 some dollars on gas. slip is another 4,200 so on old boat 7,500 to have fun without any major mishaps.
Again new boat priceless.

How many hours have you all to divide your expenses with? Hourly cost is something a boater never calcs. Owning a boat is irrational at best, but lots of fun. (motorbikes fall close to same category, I do that too, but no Golf)

I will not calc any more cost like insurance ........ etc

happy new year

Rwidman;

What did your dealer do for the 100 hour service? My Volvo has 88 hours on it now, I may have to do the service this spring. How much of it do you think you could have done yourself?

We got with $0.00. Plenty of stuff in inventory and boat to new for any other issues. Next year should be a little more expensive as we have some improvements planned.
