I've been trying to catch that show. Still no luck. I was at the boat races when they were filming Blarneys. Come to think of it, I was on Docks boat when they were filming it.

Did they show any footage of Blarneys?

It is just MY CHOICE not to run the Chain.

I wish the other 29,999 people that register their boat with the Fox Waterway agreed with you.

The draw for me was the amount of things to do on the Chain, because the wife and I like to entertain, and there was never a shortage of things to do. Plenty of bars, bands, restaurants, sandbars, raft-ups, people watching, etc. There are also a lot of events that occur, boat races, fireworks w/airshow, swing crew party, etc. The history of the area is appealing too, a simple visit to the Mineola or watching the PBS special on the Fox Valley will give you a great appreciation for the area.

I have never had an issue with the shallows of the Chain, yes I've hit bottom, but it has never caused damage due to the fact that a large majority of the Chain's bottom is silt.

 Quote:
Funny We were in grass lake and centered IN the channel in front of Blarney's is where I hit something big and hard enough the stop my engine and totally screw up a prop.(one blade bent beyound recognition) as well as a chunk taken out of my Skeg.

I'd be curious to know which channel you are referring to, The main channel running North and South, or the channel running towards the State Park on the south side of Blarneys. If I had to guess I'd bet it was on the channel south of Blarneys. That is a well known problem area. When I approach Blarneys, I always stay on plane going in until I hit the no wake, I have never had a problem. Leaving Blarneys, I idle all the way out of the channel on the south side of Blarneys until I reach the main North South channel, and that is were I plane out. Again, I have never had a problem.

There is no doubt that depth is an issue when navigating the Chain, so if your the type that simply wants to gun it and not have to think, the Chain is probably not for you (although there are plenty of those type of people out there). However, I for one enjoy navigating waterways, so the positives far outweigh the negatives in my opinion. Definitely get to know the waterway with someone experienced. Once you know all the problem areas, it will become second nature to you.

I look forward to your reviews on all the places you plan to visit, a huge advatage of a trailerable boat, albeit more work. I'd be curious to know how you think the Chain stacks-up against some of the other waterways.

I myself hope to move from the Chain over to Lake Michigan in Racine, not so much because I didn't like the chain, but I'm simply looking for a change in scenery and hope to do more cruising. I'd like to cruise to Sheboygan, Door County, and perhaps even try crossing over to Michigan. It appears that the Harbor in Racine has a lot of things to do and entertainment like that of the Chain.

Maybe a few more people will join me on Mike's tour of the Chain... we can share in the cost of lunch \:\) I have ordered some maps of the Chain and will be all studied-up for 2007. I also will have charts for Lake Shelbyville and others lakes in the area.

I agree that many waterways need your attention to navigate, but once you have it figured out (or provided a tour) you should be pretty safe. We lost too many weekends on Lake Michigan with winds out of the North.

I am looking forward to having a lot of boating options for 2007!

The more the merrier.......

Tim:
If "You guys can keep your "Puddle O'Lakes"
Lot's of other places to play in water. ALL of them deeper." isn't a specific put down to where lots of us boat, then I don't know what is.

But as they say... whatever makes your boat float.

As to paying for gas... that has never been a problem, even with twins.

I am picturing Mike driving around the Chain with a sign "boat rides for food?"

When do the authorities put in the markers et al for the season?

My new boat should be delivered the first week of May. I will probably do a shakedown in familiar waters, but would be willing to follow you around the lakes there after. I will try to remember to start a new thread in spring, with a date and meeting location for anyone interested in touring the chain.

Mike, we will have to come up with a catchy name for the event! Something to do with 'virgins' sounds interesting. \:\)

I ordered a copy but haven't received it yet. Also Tivo'd most of it, but it has the pledge drive included, kinda long. Can make a copy if you wish. ;\)

Sounds kinky, I know. It's actually a great event on the Petite Lake Sand Bar. Swing Crew is actually the name of the band that plays at the event. That's right a band on a house boat in the middle of the lake. (the sandbar is actually 3-4 feet under water). It is usually in early to mid July

To give you an idea, check out more pics at this website:

The bouys are really only needed down river (south of the dam). On the Northern end the only area that is tricky is in Grass Lake.

My boat is ready every season by April 15 so anytime after that is fine with me.

Dock, if you're bringing the food, I will be there. Last time you brought the food I gained 5 pounds.

I watched the Geoffrey Baer special The Fox River Valley & the Chain O'Lakes twice now (TIVO'ed). I enjoyed the program very much, I was however disappointed at the little time they spent on the Chain O'Lakes. They do show boat races and the history of Blarneys as well as the Mineola Hotel and its connections to Al Capone and other mobsters during the prohibition era. They also spend some time on the historical homes in the area.

They probably only spent 15 min on the Chain, and another 15 on the river. The program concentrates more on everything south of Algonquin. But the 30 minutes or so that they do spend on the Chain and Fox River North of Algonquin is enjoyable.

You can purchase the DVD at http://www.wttw.com/main.taf?p=31,1

I have no dispute with the "Chain" I am not kicking any one's puppy.
In my experiance I prefer not to run it.
Like I will prefer not to run Lake Carlyle again.
OOPS will I get jumped for that one too?

My Opinion that was asked for by someone in this thread.

PH II:
I was coming out of the state ramp and dead centered in the marked channel just even with door to Blarney's when it happened.
Reason I know EXACTLY where I was I was watching someone get thrown in by a few of his buddies as they piled out the door.
It was amusing till I hit something.

My boat only draws 25 inches of water (water line to bottom of skeg).

Go figure.

Credit Diane for the food! I assume you are referring to the outing in Algonquin? That was a great boat trip, and it was nice to be a passenger for a change.

I don't think your getting jumped by anyone here (or at least not by me), we are simply stating our opinion, like you did, which differs from yours, and that's okay. At the end of the day, Boomer will decide for himself.

Oh, and if I haven't said it yet, your opinion is wrong, but I still love you.

That is what I thought, that is a known problem area and should be avoided. You are better off idling closer to Blarneys, outside the channel in the no wake, were Mike, Dock, and other large boats have already dredged out 36+ inches for you. In regard to the other channel on Grass Lake (main N-S channel), I have never heard of anyone having a problem there.

The majority of the river south of the McHenry Dam is wide open. The channel is well marked and you can have a lot of fun on a speed run down to Algonquin. You just have to watch out for skiers in some of the twists and turns. several spots to beach the boat if you like that.

The lower river looks a bit narrow and has a few hairpin turns, but looks like a MUST for next year. I will try launching at the Forest Preserve and give it a go. This launch site looks perfect, as it is new and has a lot of parking. I think it is $10 to launch. Looks like a fun day on the river with plenty of restaurants along the way. Any good places to stop and anchor? My map shows a few places off the main channel that would work, unless they are little swamp pools \:\(
