I was in a local auto parts sore yesterday and overheard an interesting story from a fellow boater.

Seems he wanted to upgrade the stereo system on his one season old, totally tricked out Centurion with a new amp, speakers, etc. Took it to a local car stereo shop for the install. They do lots of boat stereos there.

He stopped by later in the day to check on progress and noted that the amp had been installed with four rather large screws on the inner hull of the boat. He didn’t like this location much and it became obvious why when he looked over the side of the boat. Much to his surprise, the pointy end of the four screws were poking completely through the hull and sticking out about an inch. Three of the screws were through the graphics and the fourth through the gel coat.

To say he was pi$$ed is an understatement. He said that the Manager of the store was just sick about it (as if that really helped). The Manager offered to send the boat over to a friend of his that painted cars on the side (displaced timber worker) but did really good work. At least they said they would pay for the repairs. Shouldn’t be too hard. Only four small 1/4 inch holes!

The boat owner was exploring his options with one of the owners of the local auto/speed shop where I met him. This auto store owner is also a boater (go fast type) and had some ideas on taking the boat to a pro for the repairs.

Can you imagine this happening to your pride and joy a couple of weeks before Memorial weekend? I have no idea how this will all turn out, but I sure hope the boat owner gets it done to his satisfaction. I suspect the installation of the stereo upgrade was substantially discounted after all this!

I'll bet his insurance will take care of it and go after the shop for him. Now, I imagine that will affect his premiums as well. I hope the owner does right and sends him to a GLASS shop.

I have actually heard something like this once before, but it was a subwoofer bolted to the side of the hull, with 4 carriage boltheads visible on the outside.

At the time, I was a bit skeptical, but maybe this is more common than I thought.

I guess that the thought here then is no one can do a job as good as yourself, but anyone can do a worse job.

Which is why I do most everything myself, including stereo installs.

amazing !
Now since the place was a car stereo installation place, how often did they use 1.5" or 2" screws anyway?
I get the feeling the 'installer' actually had to go find some long screws to use, and apparently this extra effort didn't also encourage him to look the boat over first.

Sounds really familiar, only the idiot was me.

A few months after buying my boat I wanted to install a subwoofer. Scouted out a spot in the 'inner' hull behind the Capt console through a trash can hatch.

Perfect!

Drilled my first 1/16 bit mounting hole and when I pulled the bit out I saw daylight!!

It was that day that that I learned the difference between an Inner hull and an Outer Hull!
