The Admiral and I have decided to install some snap-in carpet in the cockpit. I'm about to order the carpeting and tools for the snap stuff. No problem there.
But my question is...
Where can I take it to get a "finished edge" put on it? An upholsterer or a carpet place?

A few years ago we had new carpet put in the house. The store we bought the carpet from took some of the scraps and had the edges bound to be used as door mats.
So, I suspect that you could take your carpet to a local carpet store and they would bind the edges for you. If they can't/won't do it, I'm sure they could give you some ideas for who to call.

Its called binding, and for marine carpet, its often just made of Sunbrella.
Either a well equipped upholstery or carpet shop should have a binder attachment for their sewing machine. Even a canvas shop would probably be able to do it.
So that you are not price gouged by a shop, Sunbrella 1" binding (which might be a bit small) goes for about $0.40 per ft, and larger 2" stuff is about $0.80 per ft. That is retail, so you can judge how much they are charging for labor and wear and tear on the machinery.

Rollofire,
This carpet is 40oz and and a full ribbed waterproof backing, really high quality. The carpet with shipping and the carving came out to @ 350.
I have a huge piece left over that they also shipped. The way the tapers are in the bow and the narrow strip led to a lot of waste. I will use them in the engine compartment and I also am thinking about cutting out foot rests for the driver and passanger.
The price also included the snaps that I will install. They would have done it using the old carpet, but I wanted to do it myself to be certain of proper fit.
BTW I they sent me samples of both the purple you see and a teal of a lesser weight/ cost also before I ordered. The Checkmate Horsehead logo was a leap of faith - no photo, but John the owner also said he had just sent a prototype to the new owner of Checkmate, so I figured " you only live once " - Glad I went for it

Other's may have a different opinion of the price base on the fact that this a 14 and 1/2 ft. boat, but I feel that the material is not a major part of the cost, the quality of the workmanship is what I value. I live by the motto of " Beware the high cost of a Low Price "
scott.. i called the company that you used an they are sending me samples. they also said that they do alot of the carpets in some boat makers out there whatever that means. so im think i just may have them make mine. i am sending my carpet back to them to use as a templet like you did. thanks for the story u made them another customer...
