I was waxing my boat in the strong FL sun and when I turned my head in an odd way. The sun burned my vision. It had snuck up under or around the corner of my sunglasses. I sensed right away that it would be trouble.

Since that fraction of a second zapp, I have a cloudy oval area in my lower right eye vision. It has a slight tan/yellow shading to it.

The Admiral is worried, but it seems to be getting better, but very slowly, so I skipped the Doctor checkup rountine. What do you think? Something like this ever happen to you?

No but mom used to work for an eye doctor and you really should get it looked at.Drops with antibiotics in them along with steriods is probably what he would recommend.

Also he would patch the eye to keep the light out while it heals. And would look inside it to make sure no permenant damage was done.

You only have one set of eyes.So go get it checked out.

Whoa, that sounds frightening. I think a trip to a good ophthalmologist would still be in order. I'd want to make sure that you don't need to apply some sort of medication.

Hi seabuddy, joe here. I think NO soup for you, for skipping the doctor checkup routine. I think it is very important to act very fast once you know you have low vision, you need to contact your eye doctor.

Get an eye doctor to check it asap. Doctor's fee will cost less than a tank of gas for the new boat.

a little ablative bottom paint in the corner of your eye and you'll be good to go. better yet, go see an eye doc.

Ditto, go to the doctor.
Once, I made the mistake of snow skiing in very sunny conditions without sunglasses. By about 9 that evening, it felt like I had sand in my eyes. Turns out both corneas were blistered. Fortunately, no permanent damage. Get it checked.

Seabuddy,
By now I hope you've had the good sense to get your eyes checked out at the Dr.'s.
An eye patch for a day or two is a small price to pay for keeping the vision around....sorry if I sound like a "mom"....

Ladybugskater, no worries. I went, but the doc is sending me to another, so its not quite done.

Oh, BTW, you are a Mom and I thank you for being a member of the board and adding your thoughts on all kinds of boating subjects that reflect your life experiences.

I also want to thank all of you in this thread for pointing out my error in my cavalier attitude towards a health care issue.

You all were right, I was wrong.

seabuddy, how shiny is that new boat??
I had a friend suffer from a one time hit of welders flash. He thought the spots would go away, they didn't. After a couple of months he ended up at the doctor's, who subscribed a special pair of glasses and drops. He was on this prescription for 6-8 months because he let it go for so long.

I was unaware that the sun could have such a quick damaging effect as you describe. I thank you for posting this as I will be sure to wear my sunglasses more often and be more aware.

WaterMutt, if its my boat, its shiny. I believe in using them, but cleaning them up afterwards. But, really, I think it was a glint of sun off a section of SS hardware. Monterey does make and polish up some very nice hardware.

My Ophthalmologist did not give me a final diaphanous. I am seeing another doctor and then they will exchange their thoughts.

BTW, that word is my idea of a joke. I tried to look up the correct spelling and that word jumped out and was as close as I could get.

Please let us all know what the final diagnosis is. I'd be interested to know, and hope you'll be alright. (another mom!)

Good deal Seabuddy! And I have learned abit about the sun and it's ability to sear the eye like that. I have never heard of that happening before. I will be much more careful.

Seabuddy, I'm sure that the Monterey does shine nicely. I LOVE the color of yours. Have you come up with a name yet??

The one Doc did not really think that the sun could do what I experienced. He thought it was more likely high blood pressure.

Good to hear the doctors said it is going to be OK. Any advice from the docs as to how to protect against this in the future? Most people agree sight is the most important of the senses.

I spend a lot of time in the Florida sun and welcome advice.
