Guys,

I'm looking at a 2001 Four Winns 230 Horizon with an 8.1L VOLVO-PENTA GI, 100 hours.

This is a 375 HP motor with a duo prop configuration.

Any concerns about this engine I should be aware of? There doesn't seem to be too many of these "out there".

I'm wanting a big engine because we are a "stout family" and the boat will consistant have 700 pounds + of humans on board.

Any recommendation are apprecited!

I'm down to 2 boats (2000-2001 models), the Sea Ray 230 with the 7.4, or a Four Winns 230 with at least 320 HP.

Thanks!

Not too many issues with that engine/drive combination that I am aware of. It should be plenty adequate for a 230.

We have this same engine/drive configuration and are coming up on our 5th season. Two hundred hours with nary a problem.

My only concern would be to make darn sure that everyone on board is sitting and ready, and that everything is properly stowed away before hitting the throttle least you hurt someone or loose something from the extreme acceleration. ;\)

The 8.1 is one very powerful and reliable engine in all its iterations, whether it be a Merc or Volvo. No worries there.

Been on a few, haven't heard of any problems. Listen to Admin, the boat will literally jump up on plane, barely any bow rise. Make sure everyone's ready when you hit the throttle.

Both will be fine. Now your decision should be which one fits your family in the ergonomics department ie.. layout, seating, storage space, and don't forget the WOW factor.

I'll add my $.02 here. We've got that engine and drive in Baby Blue with just a hair under 300 hours of flawless operation. I can't imagine a better powerplant for that boat! \:\)

(And pay attention to Admin's advice--when you put the hammer down on that puppy, I don't care how much payload you're hauling--you're gonna MOVE!)

That boat should have great power. Friend have a 2000 Four Winns with the 5.7 volvo duoprop and it does pretty good. Your should blow your socks off. Only problem they have involved the integrated dash that Four Winns uses. They quite frequently have issues and require replacement which runs around $500. My friends dash gradually begin losing more and more functions until nothing worked. Four Winns discontinued using these dashes in there newer boats.

Hey Cincyboater. As a fellow Cincinnatian I thought I'd chime in. Well, actually I just moved from dowtown to the burbs. Anyway, sounds like an excellent choice in set up. I just got my 260 with the 8.1 but it will be spring before I can give some first hand feedback. It did seem that every dealer I went to, save Searay obviously, suggested the Volvo. I had the 5.8L duoprop in my old boat and loved it. I can only imagine what the big block is going to feel and sound like.

If it doesn't get below freezing in your storage space, then why not? No way would I be able to sit and wait for spring with a boat like that!

Seems like this original question is better suited as a engine and drive forum question.

Early 8.1s had a few fuel pump failures within the first 5-15 hours of use. If yours has not failed, you are past the issue. And if its been replaced you are also past the issue.

If your boat has a VDO all function dash panel, it has had some problems and they can still be lurking in your boat. Four Winns and VDO got behind and supported their customers and put a lifetime warranty on the whole assembly. If even one function does not work, its a simple "plug in a new one" repair. Check with Four Winns with the boat's HIN number if this worries you to see if the boat has the VDO and if its covered under the warranty.

A 2001 Four Winns 230 Horizon is a big, big boat in terms of lenght, cockpit depth, 65 gal gas tank size, cockpit floor width, and beam. Sit in the driver's chair and see how wide the flat floor space is for your feet. The model was later re-titled a "240" to bring it in line with its competition from other boat builders. LOA with its swim platform is just an inch under 26'!

Now, a question. Is a walk-in transom important to you for your intended use?

Now, a question. Is a walk-in transom important to you for your intended use? ...

Great question, not sure. While I can see the walk in transom makes getting in and out easier, most of the time it's going to be kids (5-7 yr olds) going over and back. I have not problem getting over and back on a full sun pad either.

Hence I'm still stuck between 2 really nice used boats. The 2001 FW 230 and the 2001 Sea Ray 230. They seem very similar with the exception of the walk in transom on the FW.

Right now I'm leaning more towards the FW 230 for the following:

1)Walk in Transom.....seems most new boats have it, might help with resale.

2)FW has the Volvo Duoprop....everything I've read says it's the best....

3)FW has the 8.1 Volvo vs the 7.4 Merc....

The Sea Ray in mu opinion will probably hold it's value better the Cincinnati market.

I like the FW layout better.

The only negative on the FW is it's a "repo boat" and while it appears to be in good condition one has to wonder if it was properly serviced (has less than 100 hours).

Also the FW is in KC, MO and I'm having trouble locating a surveyor in that area.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions. This board has really help clarify my requirements and it's been great entertainment too!

Brian

I agree, the Sea Ray is a nice boat. Does it have a Bravo I or Bravo III drive?

Also, what scope of work do you want the surveyor to focus on?

Seabuddy where do you find that VDO & Four Winns were going to warranty the dash issues. I know of 3 people that have had failures and not one of them was covered by warranty. Repairs ran from $500 to $600.

Seems to me that the duoprop and the 8.1 versus the other would seal the deal for me. Especially on that size boat. Add in the fact that you like the layout better and its a no brainer. That is, of course, if they are in a comparable condition. As far as resale, I seriously doubt that that would be much of a difference down the road. The boats are already 5 years old and will be leveling off on depreciation by the time you're done with it. So, I guess the next big factor that you don't mention is price? Which gets me back to your resale point, if they are priced comparably isn't that a decent indication that resale will be comparable? I wouldn't worry about the Cincinnati market per se because I think boat shoppers will go anywhere in the country to get the deal and boat they want. Just ask a few people on this board.

Dealer, but some time ago. Call Four Winns with the HIN number of the boat. 1-231-775-1351.

Its a VDO issue mostly.

The labor to pull out the single old panel and plug in a new panel is minor compared to the parts cost.

Sea Buddy, the Sea Ray is a 7.4 Merc with a Bravo 1 drive. It's still in the running. Most boat dealers seem to be closed or working short hours during this week due to the holidays.

I did finally find a surveyor in KS, KS and he's willing to do a 4-6 hour inspection including the trailer for $300.
