I have one that I've moved from my 14' jon boat, to my 17' fish & ski and now keep on our 20' Glastron. I've only used to to help move boat in shallow water when tie-ing off to shore for camping. Use it and my boat hook more as push poles than a paddle.

Oh, and the kids like to use it to paddle the tube around when we're "coving". Here's my and Mambajack's daughter using his tube and paddles.

I thought I remembered GA DNR website requiring an "alternative means of propulsion" but can't find it now.

The only reason I carry a paddle is to keep the Twins in line. I'm finding out they misbehave so they can get a light paddling! Oooooo, I love it when they squeal!

I've got my Michigan Boaters Guide, with all the rules and requirements, and I recall reading that a paddle is required. I'll have to check when I get home for more details. I frequently use mine to push out to deeper water to keep my prop safe, and the handle end is hook shaped for grabbing a dock or perhaps something out of the water. As far as actually paddling with it, doesn't seem like a good idea.

I carry a paddle, and unfortunately I had to use it at my first launching, in order to get into my slip. Of course a 21 foot cuddy is not that hard to paddle.

I'm just happy to be here!

I carry one on our 19', I don't think it would be fun to try and use it though. The Admiral has always been good at "signaling",even when we are not in trouble. GFC it's good to hear you are keeping the Twins in line!

Do keep a paddle on my 19ft. Electrical smoke/fire under the dash a couple of summer ago, my wife and daughter paddled the tube away while I handled the smoke/fire. I then used it to paddle toward the Marina until another boat came by. Since it was early in the season I paddled quite a while.

Montana still requires a paddle on boats under 25 (I think) feet. I would have to be very close to shore for the one on my boat to be uf much use. We do use it to push out of shallow water or to get someone wet, but thats about it.

I got 2, not sure if it will move my boat in any kind of wind though.

Pretty sure Indiana still requires one under 19 feet. We have two of the plastic modular ones. kids use it on the tube like the pic above.

I have two of them, and can't remember ever using them on the Glastron (knock on wood). The cell phone is always onboard, so that'd be my first resort.

From a regulation standpoint, ski's can double as a paddle. If you have ski's, you don't need a paddle (per an inspection years ago).

I can think of several uses for a paddle, and none of them for boat propulsion ...

... as an enforcer for the capn's orders.

... keeping people from boarding the boat.

... keeping other boats at bay.

... scraping zebra mussels off the bottom.

but too big of a boat for me to paddle. Heck, I get winded just waxing the thing.

I carry a paddle and have used it plenty of times. Not to paddle but to turn the boat around in some tight situations and to push with in shallow water.

Our paddle (kept it when we traded in the 19 footer) has a hook on the end so we keep it with us.
Also useful if DRIFTING (like just river current) into something we don't wanna hit.
Useless for moving the boat or to stop it when it has any speed

We carry a paddle, actually 2. The cheap hollow plastic ones Wall-Mart carries that dismantle into 3 pieces (because I am not only "freeboard challenged", I am "stowage room challenged").

I believe Kansas still requires one for smaller boats at least.

In Oregon, it's not required but is on the "Suggested Equipment" list.

Required equipment in these parts. \:\)

I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of moneyed corporations which dare to challenge our government in a trial of strength, defy the laws of our country. Thomas Jefferson "Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will seek to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed." Have one on board. We sometimes use it, along with the boat hook to "pole" our way over some rocky areas. Allows us some peace and quiet in the "off the beaten path" areas.

I bought one when we had the 1994 182SE Regal. It has transferred to all our boats, but has never been used. It has been a prop, so far.
