OK:

So I have a 2004 FW 230 that I bought with 140 hours on it in March. It now has 300 hours on it and I'm thinking of having it winterized in late Oct.

Question.....the impeller has never been replaced to my knowledge. Should I replace it during the winterizing service call (dealer) or bring it back in the spring. My concern is that replacing it this fall and then not using it for 6 months....will the impeller lose it's flexablity?

I had the U joints replaced mid summer (under warrenty)...is there anything else you recommend I have serviced during the winterizing?

Thanks!

They say it does, but I have to wonder about the new boats sitting for longer until sold. It seems to have no adverse effect on them. I am having mine done with the winterizing next month.

So why would sitting for one winter be a problem, but sitting for several winters and summer use after that (between impeller changes) not be?

The rules change when a new "leftover" vessel is for sale. Then the impeller has sat for 2 years, but it is fine. But if you change it at winterizing time, it will self destruct before spring launch? No...no sense other than it slows the pace in the service department is my guess.

I FINALLY did the impeller on our 2001 Evinrude FICHT 90 hp motor this year (prophylactically, as it was showing absolutely NO symptoms of wear in operation).

Granted, we have low hours on her, but at something like 150 hours and FIVE YEARS the impeller and housing showed absolutely no sign of wear.

Now the impeller vanes had taken something of set, but they were still MORE THAN up to the task.

I was there so I followed my own advice and installed a complete new pump assembly (housing, insert, seals, etc). But had it not been disassembled there would have been no reason to do it.

I think a lot of the paranoia about impeller replacement/wear stems from 2 things: 1) older models that NEEDED replacement every year or so (not the case now), and 2) if an impeller DOES fail, it can result in the engine overheating, bits of impeller getting lodged in the engine or risers, or worse.

Most of the rumors I've heard about impellers "taking a set" and the like come from people who had pre-92 Alpha drives or OMC.

Today's manufacturers still recommend periodic replacement, if only for reassurance and safety on the water.

Most of the outboard manufacturers have eased their standards to more like 3 years. Which, as you can see, meant 5 years to me.

But more hours would shorten the time. I'd say 5 years or 200-300 hours, whichever comes first would still be conservative enough for me.

We're talking about a part that's less than $50 and a job that shouldn't take more than a couple of hours on even the most difficult set-up.

That's not much to spend for piece of mind (or is that peace of mind ;\) )
