04/20/08 08:23 PM Selling your stuff. by Admin

OK Folks.

After a few years of many of you asking, we are now providing you a place to hock your wares.

Or to put it another way. "To sell your stuff".

http://www.boatingabc.com/classifieds/index.php

Also, see the link on the main menu bar above in between "FAQ" and "Photo Gallery".

This is free to active BoatingABC.com members. For our purposes "active" is defined as a member with a minimum of 25 postings on our forums.

I have set up a special user group that should automatically include members in it once they reach 25 postings. We shall see how well it works.

If someone should just happen to create a new account and then pad their post count to be able to place an Ad, you can pretty much count on the Ad being deleted and your user account being banned.

I am sure there are several overlooked items in this new area and it is likely to be a work-in-progress for a bit.

I just wanted to get it up and running now as it seems that if I wait until I have the time to do it right, it very well may never get done at all. ouch

Anyway, here's to hoping it works out.

OK. There is a LOT to do yet, but I want to see if anything is going to blow up and so am opening the forums to see what shakes loose.

There is a lot to cover, but I am just too burned out to deal with it right now.

So have at it and I will bring everyone that is interested up to date tomorrow. thumb

03/28/08 04:38 PM Extended Offline Period by Admin

Folks,

The board will be closed for an extended period of time starting sometime this evening or tonight. I have not decided the exact time yet, but will give notice before hand so that anyone who is replying to a thread will have time to finish up.

We are moving to a new server.

This means a complete backup of the database and then a restore on the new server. This takes several hours. Further, I want to get some other major changes done. We shall see how far things go.

I cannot give a good estimate of the duration of down time, but can say that it will be at minimum all night tonight and much of tomorrow. It may well go into Sunday.

There likely will be times that you will get a "Not Found" error when attempting to connect to this web site over the next couple days. Rest assured, we are NOT going anywhere.

Updates will be provided when time allows.

See you on the other side.

Hello All,

It seems about time to let you in on some developments here at BoatingABC.com.

We are moving again to a new server very soon. This one is more powerful and should be able to handle the load quite a bit better.

At the same time, we are integrating the Photo Gallery Site with the forums.

There will no longer be a separate login for the Photo Site as it will use the same User Tables as the forums. Once integrated, if you are logged into the forums, you are automatically logged into the photo gallery.

My plan is to leave the photos currently posted at the old photo site intact so they will continue to display in postings here on the forums. The links will not be broken.

However, that version of the Photo Gallery software will be taken off line. After the move, if you go to http://www.babc-photos.com/photos, you will only see a page that informs of the move.

I am giving you a heads up in case anyone needs to do anything with the photos that are posted on that site now. Once the move is made, you will no longer have the ability to edit or delete the images you have uploaded there. There is no easy way to import them over to the new installation of the software and I am not going to attempt it.

Of course, you will be more than welcome to repost them to the new gallery once it is available to you.

Another development concurrent with the move is that we will be upgrading to a new version of the forum software. This newer version will add some new features and squash a bug or three.

I have a few more things simmering on the front burner, but will let them be a surprise once the move is made. ;\)

One last thing for now...

The images that display in the header are WAY overdue for an update. Not like I do not have enough to do already, but this one has been bugging me for a while and that round toit is about in reach.

So...

Use up some of that wintertime restlessness and start digging through those boating pics you've taken this past season. Select one (or a few) that you'd like to see up there and send them to me.

Here is how to do so. Please follow these instructions exactly.
  • Attach the original images as they came from your camera to an e-mail. Please do NOT embed them into the e-mail itself.
  • Put "Header Image" in the subject line.
  • In the body of your e-mail list the following information.
    • Your Display Name on the forums
    • Any caption that you'd prefer I use. I will come up with something if you do not supply one. ;\) If you supply more than one image, please be sure to let me know what caption goes with which image.
  • Send the e-mail to boatingabc AT comcast dot net

Note that I will be looking over images posted to the Photo Gallery and anything there is fair game.

That's about all for now folks. I will give some warning before the move. The Forums will be off line for an extended period of time on the given day.

Have a good one!

12/17/06 09:32 AM Login Issues... by Admin

I knew there was something I was overlooking during this transition to new software. That being the issue of logging in and passwords.

For those who select the "Remember Me" feature, it may be that you have forgotten your password. As this new software uses a different cookie to know you, you will need to login the first time using this new message board.

For those who may have forgotten their password, you will need to click this link...

Have you forgotten your login information?

On this page, enter your login name and the e-mail address that is in your profile and click on the "I forgot my password" button.

The board will mail you a temporary password you can use to get logged in. Just follow the instructions in the e-mail.

Be sure to tell whatever spam filtering you may have that it is OK to accept e-mails from the boatingabc.com domain. Earthlink users in particular take note of this. I do not respond to e-mails asking me to jump through hoops so that the mail sent by the board will get delivered.
